Workshop MARIONETAS E DANÇA DUDA PAIVA - Netherland / Brazil

Led by: Eduardo de Paiva SouzaSchedule: 3rd of June from 4 pm TO 8 pmFor: Puppeteers, actors and dancersFor a maximum of: 12 persons
Duda Paiva is a dancer and a puppeteer. His technique consists in using his body as a landscape for the puppet and vice-versa, in order to explore the space and create choreographic motifs. The principle is to establish a more profound connection between the puppet (or object) and its manipulator, using movement as a narrative tool. Duda Paiva puppet technique is in fact a very specific form of choreography for two bodies that function under the direction of one imagination. A kind of physical schizophrenia is necessary to provide de dramatic tension between the puppet and his manipulator. This notion for a duet for one mind is an exiting world for a dancer or physical actor to embrace.“Dividing the beats” is a technique Duda Paiva researches of how to create two independent choreographic focuses that are governed of contemporary dance technique with classic puppet manipulation to generate a more fluid illusion. In Duda’s work, the object is inseparable from the body of the manipulator which becomes an object to be manipulated in its turn. The territory of puppetry extends body and objects merge together. Like Neville Tranter, who describes the puppet as his “third arm”, Duda subtly blends his dancer’s body with that of the puppet. He wears it like a costume and it becomes his second skin.
This course is proposed to dancers and actors who are interested in the art of manipulation, and to puppeteers who want to explore the relationship between body and puppet. Participants can bring their own puppets or objects.
